The Fake News Fiasco
We are exposed to a tremendous amount of information on a daily basis. Much of this material is frightening and increases our stress level – and, some of it is inaccurate.a
Treat information that is forwarded via social media with caution – often data is presented in a manner that is misleading, so as to further the agenda of the sender. They may seek to convince you to buy their product or use their services, or further a political or social agenda.a
Before you act on information, it’s important to make sure that it is trustworthy. a
Take a deep breath. Check the source of the information and who wrote it. Sometimes it is in the fine print at the bottom of the page. If there is no source listed, that is also suspicious. Just because they quote scientific studies or “experts” does not make this scientifically accurate.
Data that you receive or find directly from reliable sources such as government organizations (the Ministry of Health or Center for Disease Control) or recognized health organizations (the Mayo Clinic, your doctor) is more likely to be factual. a
